Day Camp for Kids at Charlie’s Acres

August 13 @ 10:00 am - 1:00 pm

About
This one-day, three-hour program is open to children ages 7-12 and will allow your child to connect with some amazing rescued animals, including goats, sheep, cows, chickens, pigs, and more. Through empathy and bonding activities with the animals, games, crafts, and more, your child will walk away with a more nuanced understanding of these often misunderstood beings and foster a greater respect for themselves, one another, and all animals who share the Earth with us. A plant-based lunch and snack will be provided.

FAQ:
Can I register my child for more than one session?
Absolutely! The activities will vary each time, so you are welcome to sign up your children for as many sessions as you’d like.

What are your age requirements?
Children ages 7-12 are eligible to participate in our kids’ summer camp.

Where do proceeds go?
Donations made to cover the camp fee go directly towards helping us care for our 150 rescued animal residents and continue to offer educational programs at no cost to schools.
A limited amount of financial aid is currently available to fully or partially cover the camp fee. Please contact jenny@charliesacres.org if you are in need of financial assistance.

What are your safety protocols?
Our staff members will direct children on how to interact safely and respectfully with our rescued animal residents, and we will only be bringing campers in with kid-friendly animal ambassador groups. We will interact with larger animals safely from the other side of the fence. All assisting volunteers will be screened with background checks. The sanctuary is equipped with first-aid kits. A parent or legal guardian of each camper will be sent a release of liability for their child to be completed after registration.

If my child has special requirements, how are they accommodated?
We will make every effort to accommodate any special requirements your child may have. Please contact jenny@charliesacres.org to discuss any of your needs or concerns. We are able to accommodate disabilities in many cases and ensure that your child has a positive and beneficial experience.

What is a sanctuary?
As a 501(c)(3) non-profit farmed animal sanctuary, our priority is the physical and emotional wellbeing of the rescued animals who live at Charlie’s Acres. Our 150 animal residents have been rescued from various situations of abuse, neglect, and abandonment. We provide each of them with a forever home and lifelong, high-quality, individualized care. None of our animal residents will be farmed for product or sent to slaughter, and they will always have a choice as to whether or not to interact with visitors. In contrast, the goal of a petting zoo is profit and entertainment, meaning that animals may be forced to be handled regardless of what they want and are often discarded when they are no longer profitable. By sharing the stories of our rescued residents, they are able to serve as animal ambassadors to help visitors walk away with a more nuanced understanding of these sensitive, complex beings and how to include them in our circle of compassion.

Is this a vegan camp?
We ask that all visitors to Charlie’s Acres refrain from consuming animal products while on-site. All food served will be 100% vegan. While we are honest about the fact that many of our animal residents were destined for the dinner table before coming to the sanctuary, our educational goals for this camp include empathy, compassion, responsibility, justice, anti-bullying, conservation, and animal care rather than focusing on dietary changes. All content is positive and age-appropriate.
