Heritage Turkey Project

2026 marks the beginning of our 22st season of the Heritage Turkey project, co-sponsored by Slow Food Russian River. Our 4-H and FFA youth are mentored in raising these magnificent heritage turkeys each year. Most of the turkeys in this project are bred and raised right here in Sonoma County. Each project member raises a small flock of turkeys on their own property and shoulder the responsibility of providing the birds' feed and care. This project has brought awareness to our community, our farmers, and our future farmers about the preservation of heritage breeds, sustainable farming, and responsible animal husbandry. The turkey project offers our young growers valuable, hands-on involvement in a viable, real-market setting. When you buy your food locally, you support family farms and local farmland for future generations.
