Deep Roots Farm
It’s no surprise that Christopher Herrera named his farm “Deep Roots.” Indeed, Christopher can trace his family’s Sonoma County roots back seven generations. Farming runs in his blood, with an ancestral history in livestock and dairy operations, corn, orchards, and vineyards. Today, he focuses on providing the highest quality organic fruits and vegetables and humanely pasture-raised livestock to the folks he considers his extended family: the many customers who shop his charming farm stand and join his seasonal CSA. And by nourishing others, he is creating community. In the Member Spotlight, we chat with Christopher about the land, the crops, and the people that inspire him.

How did you get interested in farming/start your business?
Farming has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember—it runs deep in my family on both sides. Growing up, I was immersed in various aspects of agriculture, from wine production and vegetable farming to dairy operations and row crops. These experiences shaped my passion for growing real organic food using regenerative and biodynamic principles, fostering a deep respect for the land and its ecosystems.
What do you grow?
We cultivate a diverse selection of seasonal vegetables, raise pasture-raised poultry and eggs, and fruits. Our farm has a thriving food forest with over 250 fruit trees, creating a sustainable ecosystem that supports our mission of growing wholesome, nutrient-dense food.
What do you find most rewarding about your work?
I love seeing kids enjoy the farm, I have so many fond memories being outside running around the farm or ranch. I wish to share that joy I had as a child with my community.
What do you value about being a member of Farm Trails?
Farm Trails provides a firm sense of community for diverse agriculture. Sonoma County was founded as the breadbasket for a growing San Francisco. Today, we thrive more than ever offering a range of agricultural products.
What are your hopes for the future of your business and/or Sonoma County ag?
I hope that we can build an example of real food and hospitality that can be modeled after. Our scenic landscape coupled with access to fresh seafood, wines, and amazing regional and national forests is heaven on earth!
What advice would you share with someone starting out in your line of business?
Make friends and ask questions. Farming is not easy and we need to ask for advice and seek mentorship to foster strong bonds throughout our local area.
