Region: Windsor to Healdsburg

The Russian River Valley is famous for warm summer days and cool, foggy nights. As you drive past rows of neatly-tended grapevines, don’t forget that wine grapes aren’t the only crop grown here. In Healdsburg, where locals have a penchant for traditional food, free-range eggs from heritage hens abound. Pastured pork —including unusual heritage breeds—and lamb are also common.

On the green side of things, expect to enjoy a wide variety of heirloom vegetables. The local Slow Food convivium provides local farmers with Slow Food Ark of Taste seeds, so you’ll find local farmers growing Crane melons, Sibley squash, Sheepnose peppers, and Burbank tomatoes—not to mention Romanesco zucchini, Moon and Stars watermelon and everything in between. In nearby Windsor, slightly hotter days result in excellent sweet corn and fiery peppers. Berries, fruit trees, and olives grow well in the Russian River Valley too, so be on the lookout for strawberries, apples, pomegranates, persimmons, and fresh olive oil, depending upon the time of year.

The Dry Creek Valley is famous for its heirloom peaches in the summer, and Dry Creek Peach jam can keep your sweet tooth satiated in the off season. Healdsburg and Windsor offer a perfect Sonoma County combination: some of the best wines in California paired with fabulous, farm-fresh food.
