Region: Coast Route

The geographic boundary between Marin and Sonoma Counties blurs in the winding country roads leading from the tiny town of Tomales in Marin County, through the Two Rock Valley area of Petaluma, and up through the true country villages of Bloomfield, Valley Ford, and Bodega. This is dairy country, sheep country, horse country, biking country.

Following Highway 1 up from Pt. Reyes National Seashore, you can turn inland towards Petaluma at Tomales Road, just before the town of Tomales and the turnoff to Dillon Beach. This 6-mile stretch passes 1,000-acre dairy ranches, Scottish Highland cattle ranches, restored schoolhouses, and small family ranches. Turning left from the end of Tomales Road, you head up Valley Ford Road past more dairy, sheep and horse operations, an heirloom apple orchard, sweet vacation rentals, small hotels, and great country restaurants in both Tomales and Valley Ford. And don’t miss the area’s only native plant nursery, either.
