Dan Gilbert, Profile of the Artist

You, or someone you know, probably have a Dan Gilbert design at home. The Sonoma County resident has designed and illustrated hundreds of consumer products over the past 20 years. Gilbert's best-known creation, the Triazzle line of brain-teaser puzzles, has sold millions of copies in over 100 varieties worldwide. This summer, they are being re-introduced with the art of Disney's, “Toy Story”, “Finding Nemo”, “Alice in Wonderland”, Fox's “The Simpsons” (to name a few), along with Dan's own unique nature designs.

The Sebastopol-based graphic designer and wildlife artist works in a converted barn studio on a couple of acres of gentleman's garden that keeps him dashing between Photoshop and fertilizing, product design and peach pruning, graphics and grapes. Nature has always been his primary inspiration. Now he spends part time with his designer fingers firmly planted in the soil.

In his think-tank/studio you'll find a history of nearly 3 decades of posters he has designed for organizations as diverse as the National Wildlife Federation, African Wildlife Foundation and the San Diego Zoo to the Mill Valley Film Festival. There are also hundreds of product ideas for consumer goods, in various stages of development, many of which have been licensed to gift, stationary, toy and home décor companies.

His colorful packaging designs include wine, beer, tea and jam labels, and of course, his own, original toy, game and puzzle creations. You'll find decorative equestrian designs for Back in the Saddle, a major gift catalog - and identity programs for local restaurants like Third Street Aleworks, Robata Grill, and Roadrunner Burrito.

His bold graphical style evolved from his training in woodcut printmaking at Carnegie-Mellon University in the early 70s and he continues to be influenced by an eclectic combination of tools and techniques, including digital photography and printmaking. “I love developing new concepts and birthing creative ideas,” he says. “Since moving to Sebastopol 4 years ago I've become very interested in designing for farm products – labels, packaging and even product concepts for locally grown foods. I firmly believe in fostering a green lifestyle and business model. I'd like to be more involved in promoting the natural richness that we in Sonoma have to offer our community and our neighbors.”

The 2007 Gravenstein Apple Fair poster design is a marked departure from previous years. It is a bold flat style, reminiscent of crate label art, brightly colored and decorative. It centers on a farmer carrying a red basket of apples. Behind him is an apple tree and simple landscape. “I wanted to bring in the human element,” Gilbert says, “Its about apples, yes, but its also about the people who grow them and the people who enjoy them. It's about our history, culture and lifestyle.”

The festival is selling several products with the poster design and an embroidered 2007 logotype including t-shirts, denim shirts, caps, aprons, tote bags, posters, cards and giclee prints.
